Muslim communities grew through France's colonial history and the labour migration of the 1950s and 60s, when workers from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and West Africa came to rebuild post-war France. Today their children and grandchildren are French in every sense, joined by converts and newer arrivals. Because the French census does not record religion, precise figures are limited, but estimates place the Muslim population in the millions.

From the banlieues to the World Cup final, France's Muslims are part of the nation's heartbeat.
France is home to Western Europe's largest Muslim community. The story is rooted in France's ties with North and West Africa, in post-war migration that rebuilt the country, and in a growing number of French men and women who have chosen Islam for themselves, including some of the nation's most gifted footballers.

One message, reaching every land
In France, as everywhere, Islam grows not by force but by recognition. A footballer kneels in gratitude after scoring and thanks the One who gave him the legs to run. A young woman from the banlieues finds in the Quran a dignity the world around her never offered. The message that reached the deserts of Arabia reaches the boulevards of Paris unchanged: one God, one human family, and a life that will be weighed. It is the original message of every prophet, pure, simple, and impossible to improve upon, and that purity is exactly why it keeps finding new hearts.
"We have sent you but as a mercy to all the worlds." — Qur'an 21:107
