Her standing in Islam

Honoured by name, in revelation

The Qur'an honours Maryam with a chapter of her own and names her above all women — a model of faith, purity and trust for every believer, held high while worship stays with God alone.

Chapter one · The vow

Promised to God before she was born

Her mother, Hannah, made a vow: whatever was in her womb would be devoted entirely to God's service. When a daughter was born she did not withdraw the promise, she named her Maryam and placed her in God's protection. The Qur'an records the prayer word for word, a mother entrusting her child to her Creator. So revered is this family that the third chapter of the Qur'an is named "Aal-Imran" — The Family of Imran — after Maryam's father, a sign of how deeply the Qur'an honours the household of Jesus, peace be upon him.

“My Lord, I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated, so accept it from me.”

Chapter two · The sanctuary

Provision that arrived without explanation

She grew up in the sanctuary under the care of the prophet Zechariah. Every time he entered her chamber he found food there that he had not brought and could not account for. When he asked where it came from, her answer was simple: it is from God. That single sentence is the shape of her whole life.

“Every time Zechariah entered upon her, he found provision with her. He said: Maryam, where is this from? She said: It is from God.”

Chapter three · The news

“How can I have a child?”

She was told she would bear a son who would be a sign for humanity. Her response is a question, not a protest, how, when no man has touched me? The answer given is the same answer the Qur'an gives for the creation of the universe itself: God says “Be,” and it is. Nothing is required of Him but the word.

“He said: So it will be. God creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, Be, and it is.”

Chapter four · The date palm

Alone, in pain, and told to shake a tree

She withdrew to a distant place to give birth with no family beside her. In her exhaustion she wished she had died. The reply she received was not a lecture but relief: a stream appeared at her feet, and she was told to shake the trunk of the date palm above her so that fresh dates would fall. Comfort, water and food, given directly, in the middle of the hardest hour of her life.

“And shake toward yourself the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop ripe dates upon you. So eat and drink and be comforted.”

Chapter five · The defence

She pointed to the baby, and he spoke

She returned to her people carrying him, and they accused her in astonishment — how could a woman of her purity have a child? She said nothing, only pointed to the infant. They protested: how can we speak to a child in a cradle? Then he spoke. His first miracle and his first message were the same: I am a servant of God. He has given me the Book and made me a prophet. The one who defended his mother's honour was her son, and the words he spoke were not his own.

“He said: Indeed, I am the servant of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet, and made me blessed wherever I am, and enjoined upon me prayer and charity as long as I live, and dutiful to my mother. And peace is on me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive.”

Quran 19:30–33

وَإِذْ قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَا مَرْيَمُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَاكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ

“O Maryam, God has chosen you and purified you, and chosen you above the women of all worlds.”

Quran 3:42

Muslims honour her deeply while directing worship to God alone. Her life points beyond herself — to the Creator who hears, provides, defends the innocent, and brings life by His word.
