Let's talk

A conversation between Chinese traditions and Muslim

Muslim

Alright? I'm Ali. What's your name?

You

Wei. Nice to meet you.

Muslim

You too, Wei. What matters most to you in how you were brought up?

You

Family, respect, harmony. Honouring Heaven and our ancestors.

Muslim

Honestly, Islam's big on all of that. Being good to your parents comes straight after worshipping God. Like it says in the Qur'an 17:23, 'Be kind to your parents.'

You

Really? I thought it'd be all rules.

Muslim

There are rules, but family's at the heart of it. Can I ask though, what do you think Heaven actually is?

You

The order behind everything, I suppose. The way things should be.

Muslim

So who set that order? A law needs someone who made the law, doesn't it? We'd call Him the Lord of all the worlds.

You

Confucius didn't really talk about that.

Muslim

True, he was more about how to live. Islam agrees with loads of that. It just says the order points back to whoever made it.

You

So what about my ancestors? I can't just forget them.

Muslim

You don't have to. Pray for them, remember them, be good to their friends. You just don't pray to them.

You

That's a big difference for my family.

Muslim

I get it. But the best thing you can do for them is ask the One who made them to have mercy on them.

You

And being a good person? Isn't that enough?

Muslim

Being good is massive in Islam. But God sees even what no one else sees. Like it says in 40:19, 'He knows the sly glance of the eyes and what hearts hide.'

You

Isn't Islam an Arab religion though?

Muslim

Not at all. There are millions of Chinese Muslims, the Hui, going back over a thousand years. Some of the oldest mosques in China are proper beautiful.

You

I didn't know that.

Muslim

It's for everyone. Like it says in 49:13, 'We made you nations and tribes so you may know one another.'

You

What's the next step for someone like me?

Muslim

Read a bit of the Qur'an. Pop into a mosque, have a cup of tea. And ask God yourself to guide you.

You

And if I decide it's true?

Muslim

Then you say the Shahada: 'There is no god but God, and Muhammad is His messenger.' You keep your family, your culture, your name. Take your time, Wei.

Take the next step at your own pace

Nothing here needs a decision today. Read the evidence, ask your own questions, and take as long as you need.
