Let's talk

A conversation between Christian and Muslim

Muslim

Hiya, I'm Yusuf. What's your name?

You

Sarah. Nice to meet you.

Muslim

You too, Sarah. What's your background, faith-wise, if you don't mind me asking?

You

I'm a Christian. Jesus is my Lord and Saviour. I'd never leave him.

Muslim

I'm not asking you to, honestly. Muslims love Jesus too. Virgin birth, miracles, Messiah, coming back. All of it.

You

Really? I didn't know that.

Muslim

Most people don't. Can I ask you one thing though? Who did Jesus himself pray to?

You

Well, he's God the Son. Part of the Trinity.

Muslim

Thing is, when someone asked him the most important commandment, he didn't say 'worship me'. He said God is one. Like it says in Mark 12:29, 'The Lord our God, the Lord is one.'

You

That's his human side talking.

Muslim

Maybe. But he also said God was greater than him. Like in John 14:28, 'The Father is greater than I.' Hard to be equal and greater at the same time, isn't it?

You

So where did the Trinity come from then?

Muslim

The word's not even in the Bible. Church leaders settled it in meetings about three hundred years after Jesus. That's just history.

You

But we're all born in sin. We need the cross.

Muslim

Your own prophets say kids don't carry their parents' sins. Like it says in Ezekiel 18:20, 'The child will not share the guilt of the parent.'

You

I've honestly never read that.

Muslim

Hardly anyone has. You say sorry, you change, God forgives you. Jesus even quoted it, like in Hosea 6:6, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.'

You

That sounds a lot like Islam.

Muslim

It's exactly Islam. Nobody carries anyone else's sins, and you talk to God yourself, no middleman. Like it says in the Qur'an 39:53, 'Do not despair of God's mercy.'

You

And Muhammad? Where does he fit in?

Muslim

Jesus said someone else was still coming. Like in John 16:13, 'He will not speak on his own, he will speak only what he hears.' We believe that's Muhammad.

You

So I wouldn't be rejecting Jesus?

Muslim

Not one bit. You'd be praying to the God Jesus prayed to, face on the floor, just like he did.

You

Where would I even start?

Muslim

Your own Bible, honestly. Read those verses in one go. Then read chapter 19 of the Qur'an, it's named after Mary.

You

And if it all clicks?

Muslim

Then you say the Shahada: 'There is no god but God, and Muhammad is His messenger.' No church, no ceremony. You're not leaving Jesus, Sarah. You're following him. Take your time.
