Grout’s gift for Arabic music carried her toward a culture before belief took hold. She approached Islam through relationship, but the Qur’an asked questions no relationship could answer for her. Her shahadah became public before she was ready; she responded not with performance, but with the honest phrase that faith is a process of becoming.
