Dirks possessed the training usually assumed to prevent conversion. Instead, that training made unresolved questions harder to ignore. Historical study separated Jesus’s prophetic voice from later doctrine; the Qur’an restored a continuous call from Abraham onward. Islam did not ask him to abandon scholarship, but to follow it past the border of profession.
