Hofmann encountered Islam through both human courage and intellectual structure. In Algeria he saw people endure suffering with a composure material explanations could not exhaust. Study followed experience: law, art, worship and metaphysics formed a civilisation around divine unity. Conversion cost him public suspicion, yet he continued writing because private conviction demanded public honesty.
